Adult B’nei Mitzvah

At Central Synagogue

Becoming an Adult B’nei Mitzvah

Who is eligible to become an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah?

Central Synagogue members who have not yet gone through the ritual of Bar or Bat Mitzvah are eligible. If you were not given the opportunity as a child, have converted to Judaism, or have a child/grandchild reaching B’nei Mitzvah age, this is a wonderful time to complete this mitzvah.

What are the requirements?

There are four components:

I. Academic Component

Students must have already completed, or be enrolled in one of the following courses prior to their Adult B’nei Mitzvah ceremony:

  • Melton (both first- and second-year students are eligible)
  • One full year of Text Study classes; either Talmud or Weekly Torah Study
  • One full year of Hebrew classes
  • Back to Basics in conjunction with the completion of individual project

II. Hebrew*, D’var Torah, Liturgy, & Trope Component

Students must attend a class retreat and complete a series of learning sessions comprised of Hebrew and Trope practice, D'var Torah workshops, and liturgy and service preparation. Students may choose mornings or evenings – students may not alternate between morning and evening tracks.

Kick-off Retreat: Saturday, October 17, 2015
9:00am-5:00pm • Community House

Mondays, 11:45am-12:45pm

Tuesdays, 5:45-6:45pm

Dress rehearsals (both Monday and Tuesday classes):
Thursday, April 19, 5:30pm • Sanctuary
Thursday, April 25, 5:30pm • Sanctuary

*Hebrew sessions are only required for those who are new to the language.

III. Service Component

If community service is not already a regular part of your life, we will offer many ways to get involved with social justice programs at Central.

IV. B’nei Mitzvah Ceremony

When and where is the ceremony?

The ceremony will be held in the Central Synagogue Sanctuary in the spring.

Does every student read from the Torah?

Yes. Each student will read at least one line of Hebrew. The Hebrew lessons and service preparation will prepare you.

How can I register?

Registration will be open on our website in the spring of 2016.
